With their storng commitment to fostering the holistic development of each child, the Gordon-Smiths aimed to build a florishing community with chidlren at the centre.
Fast forward to 2024, the nursery is a hive of activity with children busy with their work, growing each day supported by highly motivated Montessori teachers and assistants. The Montessori nursery has 3 purpose built special classroom environments that include; The Nido, Infant Community and Children's House. Montessori teachers guide children in their learning by observing children, providing materials that encourage self-initiated learning and offering guidance when necessary.
The Building and Garden
Smiths Children Montessori, is located at St. Luke's church, Victoria Road, Cambridge. The church building is constructed of natural stone and is a landmark in the local area with its history dating back to 1873. Set back from the road the nursery is accessible by gated entrances from the carpark and gardens.
The gardens are secure and private, fenced off from the road with mature trees and hedges that provide a generous outdoor space for children to explore throughout the day. Children learn to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs, and take part in the care of the garden, learning about nature, responsibility, and sustainable living. This outdoor environment allows children to engage in self initiated activities, creative play, hands-on practical experiences that complement their indoor learning, fostering a connection with the nature.
The Learning and Care Environments
The nursery interior spaces occupy a large hall on the 1st floor which is accessible by a staircase and lift. The setting is both warm, comfortable and functional; to enable children to learn independence and perfect the early skills they need in preparation for later life. Our prepared Montessori environment includes new furnishings throughout with a large selection of learning materials and activities for all age groups.
