What is Montessori Education? Montessori is an educational approach developed by its founder Maria Montessori. She believed in a learning environment characterised by freedom within limits, a respect for a child’s psychological development and an emphasis on independence. She believed that a child’s education should take place in a prepared environment where characteristics of the environment are tailored to suit a child’s psychological development. To support learning she designed and made learning materials to promote development aimed at different age groups. She also stipulated that the child's environment should conform to the following characterists; construction in proportion to the child and his/her needs, beauty and harmony, cleanliness, order, arrangments that facilitates activity and movement, limitation of materials so that only materials that supports a child's learning are included. Montessori is used in 20,000 schools worldwide and some famous people have benefited from the Montessori learning approach, which includes Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft), Jackie Onassis (wife of United States President JF Kennedy), Anne Frank, Princes William and Harry to name a few..
